Local to-do: Debutante Cows

Grilled Cheese Cookoff...fantastic

Grilled Cheese Cookoff...fantastic

Well, this is intriguing.  If you’re looking for something to do this weekend (other than helping your friends move or checking out Arlington’s Greek festival, my personal plans), you can head with your family to Brattleboro, VT, and watch the annual Strolling of the Heifers.  What is a heifer, exactly?  Any female cow who has not had an offspring yet is eligible.  It’s a cow coming-out party.  If they let the male cows check them out, it’s a literal meat market…

OK, so the parade of the female cows through town is a little odd.  But the theme of the weekend (which attracts some 45,000 people!) is education about local sustainable agriculture.  There’s a green expo, workshops and demonstrations for kids and adults, and–a strong draw–The Great Vermont Grilled Cheese Cookoff.  All in all, sounds like a worthwhile day trip (2.5 hours from Boston).
